PORTUGAL AND MADEIRA
(10 DAYS, 8 NIGHTS)
DAY 1 OVERNIGHT FLIGHT TO LISBON
Enjoy your overnight transatlantic flight to Lisbon.
DAY 2 TRANSFER TO OUR HOTEL WITH ORIENTATION TOUR
Upon arrival at Lisbon airport we will transfer to our hotel and have a one hour orientation tour.
Free time follows in the afternoon for shopping. Dinner in the evening. Overnight, Lisbon.
DAY 3 LISBON-SINTRA-CASCAIS-ESTORIL
Today after breakfast we enjoy a morning tour of this beautiful city.We make visits to the Al Farme and St. Georges Castle. In the afternoon we visit
the coastal city of Sintra, one of the oldest and most beautiful towns in all of Portugal. Here you may
want to visit the Royal Palace. There will be ample time to shop and have lunch in this quaint town.
We then proceed to the resort towns of Cascais and Estoril, known as the “Sunshine Riviera.”
Overnight- Lisbon
DAY 4 OBIDOS-NAZARE-BATALHA-FATIMA
Our first stop is the ancient medieval walled city of Obidos. We partake in a walking
tour through the city with enough time to purchase artisan souvenirs. A short drive brings us to the seacoast
village of Nazare where we will enjoy an authentic Portuguese lunch. We then proceed to the 14th
century Batalha Monastery for pictures and a visit.About
4PM we arrive in Fatima one of the most famous shrines in the Catholic religion. Here it is said to be
believed that in 1917 three children actually saw the Virgin Mary. A large beautiful cathedral and square
now adorns the area where it all happened. For those who wish, you will have ample time to participate
in a Mass. We partake in dinner in Fatima this evening, than a short ride back to Lisbon. Overnight-Lisbon.
DAY 5 FLY TO MADEIRA
We
transfer to Lisbon airport for our two hour flight to this beautiful island. On arrival in Madeira, we will enjoy a two hour
orientation tour of the greater Funchal area. We check into our hotel for free time in the afternoon.
Overnight-Funchal
DAY 6 FUNCHAL
After breakfast we depart for a full day of fun in Funchal. We will take the cable
cars to the top of “Monte” for a visit to the botanical park. For those wishing, they will
be able to take the famous basket ride down the hills of Monte. Lunch follows in the lower city with plenty
of time for shopping. Overnight-Funchal
DAY
7 ISLAND TOUR
We depart for an entire day
of seeing this beautiful lush volcanic island. Our first stop will be a visit to the caves at Sao Vincente.
We then drive the coast road to Sexital and Pont Moniz with breathtaking views of the coast, waterfalls and tunnels
through the volcanic rock remains. We arrive back in Funchal in the late afternoon with
enough time for a short siesta before dinner. Overnight- Funchal
DAY 8 FREE TIME
Today is a free day for optional activities. Feel free to explore the large municipal market in
the morning when the fresh fish and produce arrive, enjoy a great cup of “café” and some Portuguese baked
goods before embarking on a morning filled with shopping. Our coach will pick us all up about 1:30PM for
an optional “Lavada” walk. There are over 400 Lavada’s in Madeira that “funnel”
water down to reservoirs for the islands drinking supply. Our walk will be no longer than one mile.
Our coach will pick us up at the end of the walk. For those not wishing to take the Lavada walk our coach will drop
off at the Public Gardens. We arrive back at our hotel about 5PM. Dinner follows. Overnight-Funchal.
DAY 9- ISLAND TOUR NORTHERN SIDE – FLY TO LISBON
We depart after breakfast for a morning tour of the other side of the island. We
drive through the mountains and the forests to the northern village of Santana to view its lovely “A” frame houses.
We arrive at Funchal airport about 2PM for our flight back to Lisbon. Overnight-Lisbon.
DAY 10 FLY BACK TO THE UNITED STATES
We depart on a morning flight back across the Atlantic.
